Holiday spirit in person: $34Gs in goods donated to homeless
12.14.2005Toronto Sun Angels spread out around the city and across the country last night to deliver the spirit of the season to those in need. Blankets, towels, warm clothing and other much-needed supplies arrived at 20 shelters for the homeless in Toronto alone as volunteers from Invis mortgage brokers and their corporate partners banded together to raise about $34,000 for the supplies. "For us this is the mother lode," Tina, a support worker at the Fred Victor Women's Shelter, said after receiving the goods. "We are always running out of supplies. It is so tough to keep people from wandering off with blankets at this time of year." Angels in the Night also delivered supplies yesterday in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. Maureen Campbell, of Invis, who organized the Toronto effort, said the idea is to give items the shelters desperately require. "We call them in advance to find out what they need," she said. Invis regional manager Jim Rawson said the year-long fundraising effort helps people understand that there are others without the same advantages. "We put people into homes so it only makes sense to help people who are homeless," Rawson said. Holiday spirit in person; $34Gs in goods donated to homeless« Back |
